Muon trigger for heavy ion physics
نویسنده
چکیده
Trigger capability for dimuon events is discussed. The acceptance and low momentum reach are calculated. The rates of muon trigger caused by prompt muons, hadron decays and hadronic punchthrough are examined. A trigger strategy for Pb-Pb collision is proposed to ensure high efficiency for the signal and acceptable background rates. Possible modifications for lighter ions are briefly discussed. 13 November 1997

The ALICE muon trigger system: cosmic ray commissioning and first beam-induced events
The ALICE experiment is designed to study strongly interacting nuclear matter which will be produced in heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The muon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment is equipped with a trigger system based on resistive plate chambers. A commissioning phase was started in 2008 with the detection of cosmic rays and induced particles of the first beam injec...
متن کاملThe Atlas Muon Trigger Interface (muctpi)
At LHC interesting physics in many cases will be indicated by the presence of muons in an event[1]. Examples are searches for new heavy particles with muons among the decay products. A muon with high pT could indicate such a decay. Another interesting topic to be investigated at LHC is the search for rare B-meson decays. The branching ratio for the decay B0 -> μμ is predicted to be of the order...
متن کاملJet Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions with Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the LHC
The status of CMS jet simulations and physics analysis in heavy ion collisions is presented. Jet reconstruction and high-pT particle tracking in the high multiplicity environment of heavy ion collisions at the LHC using the CMS calorimetry and tracking system are described. The Monte Carlo tools used to simulate jet quenching are discussed.
متن کاملPerformance of the ATLAS Trigger System in 2010
Proton–proton collisions at √ s = 7 TeV and heavy ion collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV were produced by the LHC and recorded using the ATLAS experiment’s trigger system in 2010. The LHC is designed with a maximum bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz and the ATLAS trigger system is designed to record approximately 200 of these per second. The trigger system selects events by rapidly identifying signature...
متن کاملHeavy Ion Physics with CMS at LHC
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) plans to operate as a heavy ion collider for one month each year starting in 2007. LHC will be capable of accelerating a variety of ions up to beam energies of 7 TeV/charge. The design, peak and three-hour-fill-averaged luminosities are presented in Table 1 along with the maximum center of mass energy[1]. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) [2] experiment is a genera...
